For many of us, the idea of adding black into your home can be hugely intimidating. This trend has been taking the interior design field by storm, and is one of my favorites at the moment. While black is a color that often evokes thoughts of dark or depressing spaces, I think you’ll agree by the end of this post that it might just be the “new” neutral.

So how do you successfully incorporate this bold and striking hue into your home? It’s all about balance, my friends. And when that balance is struck, the results are truly beautiful. Here are ten of my favorite examples, along with plenty of tips and tricks on how to tastefully add black into your home.

Modern Kitchen

Black kitchen cabinets might sound like a daunting task, but they are perfect for brightly lit spaces like this one above. A darker cabinet color helps to ground the space, and anchor the design. If you are working with a room that doesn’t always provide ample lighting, balancing it out with a mix of lighter cabinets might be the way to go. This room is an excellent example, as these black cabinets are situated directly across from the windows.

Trendy Living Room

Built-ins are another great way to incorporate black into a space. By painting them black it almost creates the illusion of a free-standing furniture piece. The cabinetry in this space serves as the perfect backdrop for the green and brown accents. Using a lighter colored rug and sofa also help to offset such a large expanse of color in the back of the room. This allows what is normally considered a neutral (brown) become the pop of color in the space.

Luxurious Bedroom

Accent walls still haven’t left the design world yet, and this bedroom is a great example of just how well a black accent wall can work. The white bed, painted brick, and simple headboard help to cool the room down and create that crisp, clean atmosphere this homeowner was going for. In a room like this where there is so much natural light and tall ceilings, black can also help make it feel more cozy at night.

Bright Bathroom

Tile is another great way to incorporate black into your home. The hexagonal tiles in this bathroom ground the space while the light walls and glass bring the eye up towards the sloping ceiling. One thing to note is that black floors do show everything, so it’s something to consider if you have pets or kids.

Bold Dining Room

I absolutely love this monochromatic dining room. Working with a limited color palette like this one can often produce some of the most beautiful spaces! Here, black is used in all of the “heavy” locations; the table, bench, floor and doorways. By keeping the black on the bottom half of the room, the eye is brought up to the uber cool light fixture above. This space is the perfect example of “less is more.”

Unique Office

This office space highlights one of my favorite ways to use paint. By splitting the room in half with a bold, contrasting color combination, it allows all of the major furniture pieces pop off the black backdrop. Here, we can see the gold, green plant, and white accents really shine. Offsetting with the white floor is another way to keep this color palette minimal and clean.

Defined Entry

Entryways are one of the most underrated and under-utilized spaces in most homes. A great way to add a bold statement is through black framed photography and artwork. In Kerry Washington’s NYC apartment above, she is able to draw attention to the space through sleek, black lines and crisp contrasting white walls. The balance of black and white allows this incredible table to become the focal point it deserves!

Striking Windows

A popular trend that has been popping up more and more over the last few years are black windows and trim. Much like white trim draws attention to the architectural details in a vibrant, colorful space, black trim offers the same effect in clean, quieter spaces. With more and more people leaving their walls white, it is the perfect offset.

Timeless Artwork

Black and white artwork and photographs are a timeless and easy way to mix more black into your home. Gallery walls such as these give you a dramatic conversation piece without the commitment of a full black wall.

Tonal Doors

This is one of my favorite trends of the moment; black doors. Something about a painted black door screams high-end and timeless to me. It provides an elegant and finished look to any home, especially paired with matching black or contrasting gold hardware. Doors and windows are some of the easiest places to make you home feel more expensive, so this is an excellent place to start!
