Hidden Gems of Banff: Peter Lougheed & Canmore

04/03/2017 0 Comments

One of my favorite days on this entire trip was spent in a little slice of Alberta called Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and the adorable town of Canmore. We woke up early that morning to go snow shoeing around Hogarth Lakes, a 4.5k loop with some of the most incredible scenery I’ve ever seen. The drive in took us through a reserve where I got to see wild horses grazing in the fields before we came face to face with the mountains once again. Those views never got old! This trail was perfect for my first time snowshoeing; no steep hills, a shorter trail, and amazing views. We saw and fed some Grey Jay’s and took some photos before packing up our gear and hopping in the car en route to Canmore.

We decided to take the back way in to Canmore on a bumpy and muddy dirt road known as the Three Sisters Parkway It made for a slow ride and a dirty car but an awesome drive. Along the back roads we saw the Spray Lakes, Goat Mountain, Mount Lougheed, and the infamous (and beautiful) Three Sisters before coming upon the beautiful town of Canmore from above. It was here that I caught a glimpse of how electric blue the waters here are thanks to Grassi Lake having been completely melted. This trip through Kananaskis is a must when visiting here!

Once in Canmore we stopped into the Communitea Cafe, an eclectic and funky little spot that boasts a delicious assortment of vegan and vegetarian options, all made fresh. I got the protein power bowl and it did not disappoint! My suggestion? Try a cup of the Chocolate Mint Tea—easily one of the best cups I’ve ever had! Slightly less touristy than Banff Springs, Canmore has a more casual and relaxed vibe. After a long and tiring morning it was nice to stroll around the downtown area and take in the mountain views before the drive back to Calgary. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to visit this hidden gem. Here are some photos from one of my favorite days of the trip, I hope you enjoy!
