The Top Interior Design Trends of 2018 (And How To Use Them)

12/29/2017 0 Comments

Exciting news my dear friends! After the announcement of the color(s) of the year, the predictions for what’s trending in 2018 are truly taking shape. This year the buzz word is “bold”, with a push for many homeowners and designers to embrace their personal expression. The result is more exciting and innovative design and products, all of which made this post very fun to put together. Here are the biggest and most popular trends that you will be seeing in 2018, along with a few suggestions of how to incorporate them into your own spaces.

Color(s) of the Year

Pantone 18-3838 “Ultra Violet”

While certainly a bold choice, Pantone’s color of the year represents the underlying message of this years trends: embracing personal expression. In Pantone’s words the color symbolizes experimentation, which is what 2018 is all about. This color is a bold choice, but can easily be mixed into a room through art, pillows, fabrics, or accessories.

Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality…PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”

Benjamin Moore AF-290 “Caliente”

Ben Moore’s color of the year is another bold choice. The resurgence of red is predictable yet appropriate given the theme of 2018. I still love a great red front door, or a punch of color on a piece of furniture like these dining chairs. A little goes a long way with this shade of red, but there is plenty of payoff in a room like the one pictured above, too.

“Caliente is the signature color of a modern architectural masterpiece; a lush carpet rolled out for a grand arrival; the assured backdrop for a book-lined library; a powerful first impression on a glossy front door. The eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes. Harness the vitality.”

Trends in Kitchen Design

Quartz/Quartzite Counter Tops

Quartz and Quartzite reign supreme in the world of counter tops this year, followed closely by granite, butcher block and marble. Quartz is a man-made stone that is comprised of smaller stone chips, resin and pigment. Quartzite, by comparison, is a metamorphic rock that derives from sandstone. The appeal of these counter tops is in its overall durability. Many slabs carry the same variegated look as marble but is protected against stains after it is sealed.  Price wise they are still on the higher end, but they will last you a lot longer than many alternatives.

Matte Finishes

You’ll be seeing an increase of matte finished cabinetry and hardware this year, particularly in kitchen design. Changing the sheen of materials is an easy way to add interest to a room. They also add a sophisticated and upscale feel, as seen in this example below. By reducing the sheen on the cabinetry, your eye is drawn to the beautiful waterfall island.

Taupe Replacing Gray

It seems like gray has been the color for quite some time, but this year we’ll begin to see a departure towards taupe. Warm grays will likely stick around for a while, but cabinets like these below are the perfect example of how to mix warm and cool. Shaker style cabinets are also this year’s go-to style due to their simplicity and modern lines.

Open/Floating Shelving

One of my favorite trends of 2018 is floating shelving in the kitchen. Visually they help to open up any room, as seen below. Open shelving also grants homeowners the unique opportunity to display their cookware like artwork and makes a kitchen look lived in.

Trends in Bathroom Design

Wall Hung Toilets

Moving the toilet up and off of the floor is a simple way to give your bathroom a luxury hotel feel. This trend also opens up more room in the space both visually and literally.

Porcelain Wood Tiles

Due in large part to it’s durability, tile flooring is the perfect alternative to wood in a bathroom. Thanks to the mastery of faux wood tiles, however, homeowners now have the best of both worlds. These porcelain tiles come in a wide variety of colors and styles and are a smart investment for anywhere in the house. This trend isn’t going anywhere in 2018.

Matte Finishes

You can find matte finishes being used similarly to that of kitchen design this year. These floor tiles are a beautiful dulled black and create a smart and modern contrast to the timeless subway tiles. The fixtures in this space are also done in a matte finish. The end result is an effortlessly upscale look that still feels lived in.

Free Standing Statement Bathtubs

Free standing bathtubs are another wildly popular trends for the new year. Many designers and homeowners are increasing the square footage of their bathrooms in order to accommodate a statement tub. They are the perfect focal point and add a luxurious feel to any modern bathroom. There is a resurgence of antique and claw foot tubs in addition to the more modern options on the market.

Darker Stained Cabinets

Bathroom design has slowly been moving away from the traditional all-white style over the last few years. Now we are seeing a significant increase in light and dark contrasting finishes, most notably with cabinet and counter top pairings. Mahogany, ebony and black stained wood will be this year’s

Trends in Furniture and Living

Embrace of Black

Whether it be in furniture, wall colors, wood stains, or artwork, black is a key player this year. Black is the perfect color to ground any space, and pairs well with any colors. Try to sprinkles a bit of black throughout the room in picture frames, accessories, or lighting fixtures.

Minimalist Design & Aesthetic

This year design is emphasizing the “less is more” mentality in more ways than one. We will see a continued push for minimalist furniture and the continued embrace of mid-century modern design. There is also an emphasis on maintaining a clean and simple aesthetic, which is achieved by emptying your space of any unnecessary clutter.

Incorporating the Ceiling

Trade out your tired ceiling white with a statement color or wallpaper. What was once seen as dead space is another opportunity to showcase your personality and style. Pulling the paint up and onto the ceiling is one of the easiest ways to add drama. Wallpaper is another fabulous way to add personality to any room, and makes the entire space feel like a work of art.

Trends in Wallcovering

Accent Walls

Accent walls are a great way to differentiate spaces and add personality to your home. Many homeowners are using accent walls to serve as an additional form of art work, like in this kitchen example below.

Bold Powder Rooms

This is a room where many homeowners can have fun with wallpaper. Tiny rooms like powder rooms are the perfect space to go outside of your comfort zone. Small spaces like these are also a great opportunity to play with scale. Geometric prints like this one can make the space feel more intimate thanks to its repetitive nature. Alternatively, larger and more open prints can make the space feel larger and more open.

Murals

Much like an accent wall, a mural is a great way to distinguish a space. Murals can also serve as a (often less expensive) work of art and conversation piece. We have seen more and more brands embracing murals in the back half of this year, and expect it to continue well into 2018.

Trends in Paint

Lacquered Walls & Finishes

Plan on seeing an increase and embrace of lacquered and high gloss walls, trim and cabinetry. This sheen is popular over seas and is beginning to make a big splash in the U.S. Brands like Fine Paints of Europe lead the way with their beautiful high gloss paints that give any surface a mirror like finish. I love the use of it on the ceiling in this kitchen as a way to draw the eye upwards and reflect more light.

In addition to the high gloss sheen, we are seeing more and more rooms where the walls and woodwork are the same color. This works particularly well in rooms with a lot of lines and woodwork. By keeping everything consistent, there is less to disrupt the eye. In many cases painting the walls and trim the same color can also give the allusion of a larger space with taller ceiling height.
